As we start our plate tectonics unit, the 8th graders practiced putting the pieces of the puzzle together as they worked like scientists placing the continents together. It's harder than it looks. When LCHS band, choir, winter guard and ROTC came to Pleasant Hill we welcomed back some of our own. Seven former students participated in this event much to the delight of students and staff. The Olympic games are always exciting! This year we will have our own Olympic events each afternoon Monday through Wednesday. Tune in for pictures later this week. The Olympics always encourages us to come together as a country and be our very best. That's what we are striving for this week as we work. 8th grade will be starting plate tectonics and reading about science. It's doesn't get much better than that! 7th grade will be reading a section from Pigman. Here they will read about being your best and they will also be starting fungus. Our fungus gardens will begin this week! 6th grade will be reading about snakes, rattlesnakes specifically and continuing to talk about alternative energy sources such as solar and wind. I hope the sun comes out, warms us up and plays along. 8th grade has been studying earthquakes. Our favorite activity so far was to build earthquake proof houses. Some of these houses were shaken off of their foundations while others stood strong! 6th grade has begun a unit on energy sources. We have been discussing coal mining in general as well as coal mining the history of coal mining in Peoria county. One activity we did was to mine ourselves with chocolate chips. Most of us did great until we go to the reclamation part. Just like a real coal mine. |
